Diamond core cutting — also called diamond core drilling or concrete core drilling — is the most precise and damage-free method for creating circular openings in concrete, reinforced cement concrete (RCC), masonry, and stone. It is used by civil engineers, MEP contractors, plumbers, and electricians across Kerala for every project that requires a clean hole through a structural or architectural surface.
Core cutting creates perfectly round holes without vibration, cracking, or impact — even in fully reinforced concrete with heavy rebar.
How diamond core cutting works
A diamond core drill consists of a hollow steel tube with diamond- impregnated segments bonded to its cutting edge. The drill spins at high speed and is pressed against the concrete surface. As the diamond segments rotate, they abrade the concrete in a circular path — essentially grinding out a cylindrical core without any hammering or impact.
Water is continuously pumped through the hollow shaft of the drill to cool the diamond segments and flush away concrete slurry. This wet cutting method also suppresses silica dust — a significant occupational health hazard in any environment where concrete is cut dry.
The result is a cylindrical core of concrete that can be cleanly extracted, leaving a perfectly round, smooth-sided hole with absolutely no damage to the surrounding surface — no cracks, no spalling, and no vibration-induced debonding of plaster or tiles.
What is it used for?
In Kerala’s construction and renovation industry, diamond core cutting is used for a wide range of applications:
- AC split unit pipe penetrations through external walls
- MEP duct installations in hospitals, hotels, and offices
- Plumbing pipe entries through floor slabs (riser holes)
- Electrical conduit and cable duct entries
- Anchor bolt holes for structural steel connections
- Railing post bases in concrete floors and walls
- Fire sprinkler pipe penetrations through fire-rated walls
- Soil vent pipe (SVP) penetrations through floors
- Structural investigation core samples (for concrete testing)
- Through-wall drainage pipe openings
Sizes: from 25mm to 400mm
Diamond core drills are available in a wide range of diameters. At Palakkad Concrete Cutting, we carry core bits from 25mm (1 inch) up to 400mm (16 inches) in a single pass. For openings larger than 400mm, we can use overlapping core cuts or switch to diamond wall sawing.
Core cutting vs. jackhammer breaking
Many homeowners and small contractors in Kerala still use pneumatic chisels or angle grinders to create openings in concrete walls. While cheaper upfront, this approach has serious downsides:
Jackhammer / Chisel
- ✕High vibration — cracks plaster, loosens tiles
- ✕Generates silica dust (health hazard)
- ✕Irregular, rough hole edges
- ✕Risk of cracking structural concrete
- ✕Loud — unsuitable for occupied buildings
- ✕Slow — hours per opening
Diamond Core Cutting
- ✓Zero vibration — no cracking or damage
- ✓Wet cutting suppresses all dust
- ✓Perfectly round, smooth edges
- ✓No risk to surrounding structure
- ✓Quiet — suitable for occupied buildings
- ✓Fast — minutes per hole
Can it cut through rebar (RCC)?
Yes — diamond core drills cut through reinforced concrete with TMT rebar as efficiently as plain concrete. The diamond segments in the core bit are hard enough to abrade both concrete and steel. There is no need to locate and avoid individual rebar bars, though our operators do check rebar density before selecting the appropriate drill speed and feed rate.
For slabs with post-tensioning tendons (common in commercial buildings and multi-storey car parks), we use ground-penetrating radar (GPR) or X-ray scanning before cutting to map tendon locations. Post-tensioning tendons must never be cut — doing so can cause sudden, catastrophic structural failure.
Cost of core cutting in Kerala
Core cutting costs in Kerala depend on the diameter, concrete thickness, rebar density, and accessibility. As a rough guide:
| Diameter | Typical Use | Approx. Cost/Hole |
|---|---|---|
| 25–75mm | Electrical conduits, small pipes | ₹200–400 |
| 100–150mm | AC units, plumbing pipes | ₹400–650 |
| 200–250mm | MEP ducts, ventilation | ₹650–900 |
| 300–400mm | Large duct openings | ₹900–1,500+ |
